With construction activity falling, costs rising and confidence fragile, further pressure on plant-hire firms risks weakening the supply chain needed to deliver new homes and infrastructure.
Plant-hire businesses supply the machinery that keeps Britain building. Over 95% are SMEs and cannot absorb the cost of replacing fleets before the technology, infrastructure and energy pricing are in place.
If ministers want construction to support both growth and decarbonisation, the sector needs a policy framework that supports investment, lowers deployment barriers and takes a practical, technology-neutral approach.
