CPA CEO Steve Mulholland appeared on TalkTV discussing why scrapping planned fuel duty rises would be welcome – but why government must go further to support the vital firms keeping Britain building.
As Steve made clear, without fuel, plant-hire stops – and without plant-hire, Britain’s homes, roads and infrastructure projects simply do not get built.
Yet plant-hire firms are already being squeezed by rising National Insurance costs, inheritance tax changes, wage pressures and soaring fuel prices, all while government continues asking the sector to deliver faster growth and 1.5 million new homes.
Steve also highlighted how countries including Ireland, Canada and France have introduced temporary fuel duty or VAT relief to support fuel-intensive industries through periods of rising costs, arguing the UK should now consider similar targeted support for construction and infrastructure supply chains.
Our sector supplies the machinery, logistics and expertise behind Britain’s infrastructure pipeline. If ministers are serious about delivering growth, housing and major infrastructure, they must do more to support the businesses making it possible.
